Thurs. Nov 12th - The Vet faxed Sam's blood results & his calcium came down to 15.2mg/dL. Steve saw Dr. Stoll at lunch when he visited Sam and she explained that it typically takes 24-48 hours for the Pamidronate to work, if it is going to work. We still discussed what we would do if he doesn't improve in the next few days.
We visited Sam tonight and he ate a whole hamburger patty for us! His back legs are still very weak but the fact that he ate did make us feel a little better.
When we were leaving ECVR at 9pm Dr. Stoll was still there & met with us to discuss our options. She is off this weekend so we were grateful to have this opportunity to chat with her. She explained that even if his calcium came down on Friday he should stay at ECVR till Sat. because a side effect of the Pamidronate is electrolyte/mineral abnormalities. One of the key minerals they test for is magnesium & the results won't be back until Saturday morning. She encouraged us to give the Pamidronate time to work. Another option she mentioned was trying the Prednisone again which may bring down his calcium & increase his appetite. She even mentioned another chemo. Each chemo comes with risks and although we believe Palladia gave us another good month with Sam, we have to weigh all the options. We think we've put him through enough and just want some time with him to say goodbye - the Prednisone may give us a little time.
Below is video of Sam eating - a small thing that made us smile.
