Sam trip to ECVR, not good news

Sat. Feb 13th - We gave Sam 1000 mL of fluids one Prilosec, two Prednisone, & 6 Tramadol. We received 3-4" of snow, a rare occurrence here.
Overnight Sam made a strange noise 3-4 times. The best we can describe it is a dry heave sound but his breathing seemed normal. He woke us up at 7am and had some diarrhea. He also slipped coming back up the two steps from our yard to the deck & hurt his right hip. He wasn't interested in his kibble at breakfast and seemed to be hurting on his back legs. We were able to get him to eat some crackers and a peanut butter sandwich.
Since he didn't seem to feel good we took his temp & it was 105.1°! We called ECVR to give them a heads up & took him in. Saturday mornings are usually slow at ECVR so they were able to take Sam quickly & we met with Dr. Stoll . She said they measured his temp at 105.2° so they plan to do blood work, a urinalysis and possibly x-rays. During his physical exam she felt a new lump in his left anal sac, the opposite side from where she'd done the surgery on Aug. 31st. She said it felt small and knowing the cancer is already in his lymph nodes is not alarming or something we should rush into surgery. Obviously, this was disappointing news to hear but since we aren't fighting the cancer we knew it was possible.
When we came home Dr. Stoll called with some very bad news. The x-rays now show 4-5 metastasis nodes in his lungs as well as lymph nodes large enough to see on the films near his L4 & L5 vertebrae. The spread near his spine can easily lead to cancer in his bones then cause pain & discomfort. His WBC are elevated so she started him on IV antibiotics.
At 5pm we picked Sam up from ECVR so we could have him at home with us tonight. When we brought him home his temp was 102.4° but when we checked it again at 8pm it was 104.2° so we gave him 1000mL of fluids at room temp to see if it would help cool him down.
At 9pm we called Dr. Stoll to ask if we could give him some Cephalexin we had left over from Sept. She explained that the IV dose of antibiotics they'd given him right before coming home had a 12 hour ½ life & should be still working to keep his temp down. Right before going to bed we checked his temp & it was down to 103.8°
