Wed. Dec 23rd - We gave Sam one Prilosec, two magnesium tablets, two Sucralfate, two Prednisone & 6 Tramadol. Steve took Sam to ECVR this morning for his 3rd round of the bisphosphonate.
Dr. Stoll called at 3:30pm to let us know the treatment went well, his calcium is 10.2 & he could come home at 5pm. We picked him up and came straight home. He ate dinner and seemed to be doing ok. He was tired but we just assumed it was from his day at ECVR.
Around 8pm he coughed a few times and then around 10pm we noticed he was having difficulty breathing. We know a side affect of the bisphosphonate is electrolyte issues so we called the ER folks and took him back to get checked out. We arrived there at 10:30pm and they took him for blood work. It was a busy night for the ER staff and we didn't see Dr. Love until 12:30am. She said his electrolytes looked ok but wanted to do a chest x-ray & pulse-ox. We agreed. His x-ray appeared to have changed since the Dec. 10th x-rays which concerns us. His pulse-ox came back at 90%, above 95% is normal. She recommended he spend the night, & let them put him on oxygen and start antibiotics in case what she saw on the x-rays was pneumonia.
We had promised him we wouldn't leave him there for the night but after hearing the results and seeing him still have trouble breathing we felt we had no choice. We didn't get home from ECVR until 1:30am.
Oh Sam Dog, it has been 9 years since the Christmas Eve emergency stomach surgery & we so wanted you to be home with us this Christmas.
